Lutein is a carotenoid widely found in colorful fruits and vegetables. Nutritionists have long appreciated the health benefits of lutein and have been working to tap more potential uses. According to Innova data, the composite annual growth rate (CAGR) of lutein and zeaxanthin-based new product launches (including supplements) was 25% and 18%, respectively, from 2012 to 2016; from the global price point of view, the composite annual growth rate of lutein prices is expected to reach 6.3% between 2017 and 2020, and the market size will exceed 3.5%. Billions of dollars.
A recent study published in the Journal Nutrients found that the higher lutein levels, the higher the frequency of physical activity, which may help reduce the risk of chronic disease. This study may pave the way for lutein in the wider application of supplements or sports products.
Researchers at the University of South Australia point out that the health benefits of lutein are mainly attributed to its antioxidant, antimutagenic and other physiological effects on cell function. Randomized controlled trials in rats and human tests have preliminarily shown that increasing lutein intake can increase lutein circulating concentrations, which may increase the frequency of physical activity and reduce the risk of chronic disease.
A total of 1,267 literatures on Lutein and exercise nutrition were systematically evaluated. The results showed significant heterogeneity between physical activity and lutein. Of the 17 valid studies, 11 reported positive correlations between lutein and physical activity, three reported mixed results, and the remaining three showed no necessary correlation. In general, the negative correlation between the two has not been reported.
Researchers systematically reviewed the relationship between lutein status (dietary intake or blood lutein concentration) and physical activity, and found a positive role between the two, and concluded that increasing lutein, or other carotenoids, can increase the frequency of physical activity, thereby reducing the risk of chronic disease. However, the study also points out that large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed to determine their effects on physical activity and other health benefits.
For the health benefits of lutein, there is no doubt that its powerful eye protection effect. At present, the products of lutein in the market are mainly claimed to protect eyes. According to Innova, new products targeted at eye health increased by more than 70% in 2012-2016, with major markets concentrated in North America, Western Europe and Asia. In addition, lutein is also used in the field of cognitive health, known as "intelligent medicine" or "cognitive enhancers". Lutemax 2020 lutein, produced by Omni Active, contains not only lutein, but also RR-zeaxanthin and RS-zeaxanthin. It is well marketed for its eye protection, relief of high intraocular pressure and visual fatigue caused by prolonged exposure to electronics, improvement of sleep quality, and other health benefits. Feedback.
With regard to the innovation of lutein in the field of sports, we believe that in the near future, through the joint efforts of scientists, business think-tanks and all enthusiastic sports health enthusiasts, new products will emerge in endlessly, we will wait and see.
