The research team recruited 97 people with type II diabetes who were given high concentrations of sulforaphane or placebo every three months. The team found that the average blood sugar level of the subjects taking sulforaphane decreased by 10% compared with the placebo group. Diabetic obese patients with "abnormal regulation" have the largest reduction in blood glucose levels, and their baseline blood glucose levels are the highest. Although 10% does not sound so much, it is enough to reduce the risk of complications in the eyes and kidneys.
They also found that sulforaphane was completely different from metformin in lowering blood sugar levels. The latter makes cells more sensitive to insulin response, allowing cells to clean up too much sugar in the blood. In contrast, sulforaphane reduces the level of glucose injected into the blood first, by inhibiting the enzyme activity of the liver that drives glucose. Because they solve different problems in different ways, the research team is confident that these two drugs can complement each other. Sulforaphane can be used as an alternative to metformin, so those who are afraid of kidney problems can take sulforaphane. Finally, because sulforaphane can reduce glucose production, it can help diabetics to avoid diabetes, plus other new therapies, and may eventually win over type II diabetes.
